The University of Zielona Góra, appointed in 2001, is the biggest academic centre of the voivodeship. The university was formed by the merger of the College of Pedagogic Studies and the Zielona Góra University of Technology. The offer of high education is supplemented by such establishments as the State Vocational Colleges in Gorzów Wielkopolski and Sulechów, the College of Public Health of the Lubusz Region, the John Paul II Western College of International Trade and Finances in Zielona Góra, Business College in Gorzów Wielkopolski, the Jan Benedykt Solfa College of Humanistic Studies in Żary, the Zielona Góra and Gorzów Wlkp. Higher Seminary in Paradyż, as well as branches and satellite educational centres with their seat in other cities (such as Collegium Polonicum in Słubice, or the Branch Faculty of Physical Education in Gorzów Wlkp.). The schools of the Lubuskie Voivodeship are, in the vast majority, young institutions, which have ondergone rigorous investment process in recent years. Their premises, equipment and accessories have been modernised and developed. At the same time, the current educational offer is being extended and new majors are opened. The University of Zielona Góra is the prevailing university in the region. The University of Zielona Góra has been classified among 80 “academic institutions” to 58th place in the most prestigious Ranking of Academic Institutions 2012 prepared by the Perspektywy Magazine and the Rzeczpospolita Daily. The universities of the region, apart from educational tasks, increasingly use their scientific potential in improving the technological development and the competitiveness of the region’s economy. The Contact Point of Research Programmes of the EU of the University of Zielona Góra – an entity supporting the European fund acquisition for financing research project, is the example of such activity. In this regard, research teams from the University are engaged in the implementation of such studies within the Framework Programme for Competitiveness and Innovation or the seventh Framework Programme 2007-2013.
