Tourism

The Lubuskie Voivodeship is a region with valuable and unique tourist attractions. These include natural resources, as well as monuments of cultural heritage. In the case of the former, the Lubuskie Voivodeship is classified as the cleanest region of the country. Forests, the mainstay for wildlife, as well as great places for relaxation and recreation, are the special abundances of the region. Numerous attractive lakes and rivers create very good conditions for the development of tourism and water sports (canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing), recreation and angling. The determinant of water tourism development is the construction of infrastructure and adaptation of the existing marinas, ports, equipment hire points, as well as accommodation and camping facilities. Some communes, with the support from the EU programmes, have already invested in this field. An example is the “The Oder River for Tourists 2014” Project carried out within the frames of the cross-border co-operation of the Lubuskie Voivodeship with the Brandenburg Region. The catalogue of attractions is supplemented by historical monuments. Monuments of the Romanesque and Gothic age have preserved in the region – churches and castles. A special place in the cultural landscape of the region is the wooden sacred architecture developed between the fifteenth and the nineteenth centuries. The eclectic and Art Nouveau tenement houses, which complement the spatial order of older urban planning, are the results of the nineteenth century architecture. The Fortified Region of Międzyrzecz, in other words, a complex of underground fortifications built by Germans between the Wars and during the Second World War, the Mużakowski Park included in the List of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the interior and furnishing of the former sanatorium in Trzebiechów, the only work of the Belgian artist Henry van de Velde in Poland, the founder of Art Nouveau, and the “Ujście Warty” National Park, as well as historical monuments of Żagań. The following are among the cities where tourism is one of the basic functions: Lubniewice, Łagów, Sława, Słubice, Świebodzin and Torzym. Tourist resorts are also: Żagań, Międzyrzecz, Pszczew, Lubrza, Gorzów Wlkp. and Zielona Góra.
